Why I Think Dogs and Weddings Are the Pawfect Match

(And no, you’ll never persuade me otherwise!)

Let me start by saying this: dogs have been a huge part of my life since childhood. So my love of dogs definitely didn’t begin when I became a wedding photographer and started capturing cute moments of pups in tuxedos and flower crowns, it started way before that (although this has certainly helped increase it).

Growing up, we had two dogs; Milly and Pippa. They brought so much joy into our home. So, it almost goes without saying, that when I finally moved into my own place, it didn’t take long before I welcomed a new four-legged best friend of my own into my life: a chocolate Labrador named Hunter. He’s an absolute star, and I love him to pieces. If I were getting married, there’s no question, Hunter would be a VIP guest at my wedding.

Why Dogs at Weddings Just Make Sense

Now that you know a little more about my long-standing love of dogs, let’s talk about why I believe dogs and weddings are a perfect match.

First and foremost, for many of us, dogs aren’t just pets, they’re family. So when you're planning your big day and thinking about who you want by your side, it's only natural to include your most loyal companion. Dogs are dependable, loving, and (let’s be honest) they often steal the show in the best possible way.

Secondly, if you’re lucky enough to have a well-trained dog, there are so many fun and meaningful ways to involve them in your ceremony. I’ve seen dogs act as ring bearers, join the bridal party as honorary groomsmen or bridesmaids, and even walk their humans down the aisle. When it comes to dogs at weddings, the possibilities are endless!

My Top 3 Tips for Including Dogs in Your Wedding

Planning to include your dog in your wedding ceremony? Here are my top tips to help the day go off without a hitch:

1. Dress to Impress

Think about what your pup will wear on the day. Will they match the bridal party with a custom outfit, or would a simple touch like a floral collar, themed bandana, or bow tie do the trick? These little details make a big impact in your wedding photos and help your dog feel like part of the celebration.

2. Check with Your Venue

Not all wedding venues are dog-friendly, so it’s important to ask ahead of time. Some venues might allow dogs for outdoor photos only, while others may be happy to welcome them for the whole day. Getting clarity early on will help you plan accordingly and avoid any surprises.

3. Practice Makes Pawfect

If your dog is taking on a special role, like walking down the aisle or being part of the ceremony, take time to practise. Make sure they’re comfortable with the setting, the crowd, and the job they’re doing. And don’t forget to let your wedding photographer (hi, that’s me!) know, so I can be in the right place at the right time to capture those unforgettable moments.

Whether it’s posing in a bow tie or trotting down the aisle with the rings, there’s something so heartwarming about having your dog by your side on your wedding day. So if you’re planning a celebration and considering whether to include your pup, my answer is a big, enthusiastic yes!

And if you’re still looking for a wedding photographer who loves dogs just as much as she loves capturing wedding stories, I might just be the pawfect fit.
