Why Natural, Candid Wedding Photos Tell the Best Story

Prompts, not poses, with or without your dogs!
Natural, candid wedding photos are the ones that take you straight back to how your day felt, not just how it looked. The big laughs, quiet glances, slightly chaotic hugs and all the in-between bits that happen when you forget I’m there.
“Prompts, not poses” is my mantra when it comes to capturing beautiful, meaningful wedding photos: the kind you’ll treasure for years, not just post on Instagram once and forget.
What Do Natural Candid Wedding Photos Actually Look Like?
Essentially, I shoot in a documentary style. Think of me as your professional “fly on the wall”, there to quietly document what’s unfolding, not direct it.. But every now and then, a little nudge in the right direction helps. That’s where prompts come in.
A prompt is a suggestion. It might be something like, “Whisper something silly in their ear,” or “Walk away and one of you look back at me.” It could just be “look at each other” or yes, sometimes even something as simple as “smile”. It's never rigid or forced. It's a playful cue that sparks genuine reactions. And that’s when the magic happens.

Less posing, more presence | a documentary wedding photographer approach
When you’re trying to hold a certain shape, angle your face just right, or perfect your hand placement, you’re pulled out of the moment. You're performing, not living. And on your wedding day, one of the most emotional, joyful, overwhelming days of your life, the last thing I want is for you to feel like you’re on a photo shoot.
Prompts help keep the focus on what matters: connection, emotion, and the in-between bits you might not even realise are happening. A glance. A laugh. A shared breath. All the good stuff.

The photos you’ll love for years are the ones that feel like you
Just like dresses, flower choices, or cake designs, photography trends come and go. That dramatic dip kiss? The heart hands? Sure, they had their moment. But in a few years, some poses can make your wedding album feel more like a time capsule than a timeless keepsake.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t include something trendy if it feels right for you. Absolutely go for it if you love it! But by leaning into prompts and allowing space for spontaneity, we create something that feels personal rather than prescribed, and that stands the test of time.

Prompts create photos that feel like you
This is the big one. Prompts leave room for personality. They invite your quirks, your humour and your connection into your photos. How? Because you can interpret the prompt however you like. Maybe you’ll follow it exactly. Maybe you’ll laugh at it (honestly, that laughter is often the shot I’m chasing anyway). Either way, it’s real. It’s you. It’s a moment that actually happened, not a moment we made up.
And yes, this works whether it's just the two of you or the whole gang (dogs included - always welcome in my world). Some of my favourite shots have come from the chaos that only a muddy-pawed best friend can bring.

Will we still have couple photos if we don’t want lots of posing?
Absolutely. I’ll always make space for the two of you to slip away for a few relaxed photos together, and I’ll give you gentle prompts when they help. You’ll never be left wondering what to do with your hands or expected to perform for the camera. The aim is lovely couple photos that feel like you, not a long, awkward photoshoot.
So what does this mean for your wedding photos?
It means you’ll look at your photos years from now and feel like you're right back there, not just remembering what the day looked like, but what it felt like. That’s what I want for you. Not stiff smiles or cookie-cutter shots, but genuine memories frozen in time.
This relaxed, documentary-style approach is how I photograph weddings across the UK, focusing on real connection rather than perfect poses.
